The Tulisoma South Dallas Book Fair brings friends, families, area residents and visitors to the Dallas African American Museum.

“We started this event 8 years ago as something that would lift the souls of folks in South Dallas,” said Co-Founder Dr. Harry Robinson, Jr. “It was originally called the South Dallas Book Fair.”

Tulisoma is a Swahili word meaning “we read”. The fair is staying true to its original mission by giving visitors the opportunity to experience some of the best African American literature in north Texas.

“We decided to stick with our core mission, and that is to bring readers and writers and authors together,” said Robinson.

The fair is also a place where local artists like Freda Ross-Finley can sell their creations.

“Off and on I’ve been making jewelry probably for close to 20 years,” said jewelry artist Freda Ross-Finley.

But Ross isn’t just making jewelry. She’s making a difference.

“I made a couple of the breast cancer awareness bracelets just because awareness reminding women that they need to have their annual mammograms and reminding them that they need to do their self exams,” said Ross. “I just thought that was important.”

Ross’ handmade bracelets are 12 dollars each and 25 percent of the proceeds go to Tarrant County Susan G. Komen for the Cure. With Breast Cancer Awareness month coming in October, Ross hopes her bracelets will help raise awareness.

“I want to encourage everyone to get their bracelets, get your mammograms, get your exams and let’s beat cancer,” said Ross. “Not just breast cancer but cancer over all.”

Ross says she’s thankful for the opportunity to support breast cancer awareness, and Robinson appreciates people like Ross, who help make the fair possible.

Gathering for hope. Gathering for remembrance. Gathering to celebrate. Thousands of people from across North Texas traveled to Memorial Stadium in Frisco to participate in the 2010 Frisco Relay for Life and they all came for one reason.

“To support all those that survived cancer and to show everyone we’re united in our battle against cancer,” said Frisco Mayor Maher Maso. “We’re a community and we care.”

The relay lasts 24 hours, to symbolize cancer never sleeps. Teams are formed and each member takes turns walking or running around the track.

“Cancer affects everybody’s lives,” said Frisco D-League Head Coach Nancy Lieberman. “Cancer does not discriminate. We need everyone to dig deep and come out. Just be a part of what we’re doing cause we’re a team.”

Along with Texas Legends NBA D-League coach Nancy Lieberman, Olympic Gymnastics Gold Medal Champions, Nastia Liukin and Carly Patterson, attended the event to show their support.

“I got invited by Mayor Maso and it’s in my hometown and backyard,” said Olympic Gold Medalist Carly Patterson.

A common theme running through the evening event is that everyone is affected by cancer in some capacity including the Mayor, who is also a cancer survivor.

“It took me a long time to be able to talk about what I went through,” said Maso. “It’s good to share with others. It’s also good to tell others that are facing it today that they’re not alone.”

“It really is a great cause and great event and I think it looks like a good turnout so far,” said Olympic Gold Medalist Nastia Liukin.

All proceeds from Frisco Relay for Life will benefit the American Cancer Society. Relay for Life is a popular fundraiser that is sponsored in countless cities across the United States. Various other events occur besides the relay itself, including performances, a Luminaria Ceremony and community-sponsored booths.

“We are a full service cancer recovery boutique here in Plano and we’re here to help people going through any stages of cancer to get products and things they need to help make this journey just a little bit easier for them,” said owner of All About You Tracy Gomez.

This is an opportunity to celebrate those who survived cancer and to remember those who lost the battle. Survivors are the propelling force of Relay for Life and are celebrated as the guests of honor.

Doctor Lezlie Maloy at Spring Valley Chiropractic in Dallas is using a new type of treadmill designed by NASA which manufacturers promise will lead to faster recovery from injury and drastic improvements in training outcomes for athletes. It is called the Alter-G Anti Gravity Treadmill.

“I have basically focused my practice on athletes,” said chiropractor Lezlie Maloy. “I see predominately tri-athletes and runners but really athletes of any kind.”

One of the athletes Maloy works with is Jack Weiss.

“I will be 65 in June,” said athlete Jack Weiss. “I have won six Ironman. My best time is eleven hours and five minutes.”

Since using the Alter-G Anti Gravity Treadmill Weiss says he has seen significant improvements in his training.

“I have done one race since I’ve been on it and actually I am running two minutes a mile faster than I have in the last four years using this machine,” said Weiss.

So how does the Alter-G Anti Gravity Treadmill work?

“Once you get inside and you’re sealed from the waist down it uses differential air pressure,” said Maloy. “Basically it pumps air into the bag or into that bubble and lifts you off the treadmill very gently.”

The Alter-G Anti Gravity Treadmill allows users to run at a lower body weight by controlling the pressure in the enclosure. This allows the user to change their weight reducing it by as much as eighty percent.

“It’s like a regular treadmill but you feel lighter,” said Weiss.

Unlike regular treadmills just finding an Alter-G Anti Gravity Treadmill at your local gym to run on will be a challenge.

“There’s only a handful of the machines in Dallas and one of them is at the Dallas Cowboys training facility,” said Maloy.

Among professional and endurance athletes the treadmill has reportedly shown great promise so far but the jury is still out on this new technology.

“I think it’s a good concept but I think you can get the same benefits from being a little smarter about how you rehab but then again I think if you don’t have someone there to with you that it could be a really good tool,” said Wellness Coach Daniel Crouch.

Maloy says that along with training and rehabilitation benefits it can assist users with their weight loss goals.

Want to get dirty and have fun? Then this is for you! It’s the 2009 Mud Run for charity. Thousands from all over descend upon DFW for this event. It’s a 6-mile course featuring over a dozen obstacles. The catch? It’s a boot-camp style course consisting entirely of mud.

Proceeds are donated to various charities around DFW. For a dirty time check out www.mudrundfw.com and sign up for the next race taking place on Saturday, November 7th, 2009 in Forth Worth on the Trinity River Trail. Take a look at the video above!
