After seeing U.S. soldiers based in South Korea on a family trip Patrick and Tania Foster decided they wanted to help. The brother and sister duo created Dallas is Love in 2004 which is a non-profit that support the troops.

“Dallas is Love was created in 2004 in order to specifically benefit troops stationed in South Korea as my brother and I cam to recognize that there are a lot of different remote bases across the world that house and contain United States military troops,” said Tania Foster. “A lot of people were focusing on Iraq and Afghanistan but we have soldiers doing things all across the world.”

“Once we got back home that’s when my sister and I got to talking and we realized that we really needed to recognize all the efforts by the U.S. Military,” said Patrick Foster.

Tania and Patrick decided to go through the Army and Airforce Exchange Service to provide gift certificates to soldiers stationed all over the world.

“No matter where a soldier is going to be there is going to be an AAFES near by,” said Endre Purnsley. “It may not be a fixed facility. It may be a trailer but you are going to have all the creature comforts. You’re going to have Kool Aid. You’re going to have sunflower seeds, beef jerky, toiletries and baby wipes.”

Staff Sergeant Endre Purnsley has been stationed around the world.

“I’ve been stationed in Korea, Kosovo, Iraq and Italy,” said Purnsley. “Being away from home is always tough. There is really no way to describe it. If you’ve never had to leave your family to answer a higher call you may not know that you find a courage that’s inside of you that you never knew existed.”

And the gift certificates provide a little comfort.

“It’s a little slice of home and there is just enough there to get you over the hump,” said Purnsley. “The gift cards go a long way because ATM’s are hard to find in Iraq.”

“I really felt that it was a time in my life that I wanted to give back more,” said Director of Development for CONTACT Crisis Line Bob Munro.

Bob Munro was in the corporate world for twenty five years when he decided it was time for a change. He was searching throughout the greater Dallas area when he came across Executives in Action.

“I would highly recommend Executives in Action no matter if the executive is just in transition,” said Munro. “It’s a great way that they can still use their skills sets.”

Executives in Action is an organization designed to help put a positive spin on unemployment. They match executives up with nonprofits in need of some high level expertise.

“We were placed with Bob Munro,” said President of CONTACT Benaye Rogers. “He came and worked with us for three months. In that time period he helped us raise a little over twenty five thousand dollars.”

Munro, the first executive in the program, joined CONTACT which is a twenty four hour crisis hot line that takes over forty two thousand calls a year.

“We really help a broad number of people from breaking point to turning point,” said Rogers. “The number one thing that people call us about that is atypical is a bad day. On average we may call a loved one or a friend but what we have to remember is that a bad day can turn into a bad week that can turn into a bad situation.”

For Munro the nonprofit world proved to be one he wanted to stay in.

“I’m using skills I’ve learned over the passed twenty five years but I feel like there is more heart in it,” said Munro.

“I can say that we would not have been able to accomplish many of the things that we have accomplished with Bob and our other placements from Executives in Action that quite frankly we would have been unable to afford otherwise,” said Rogers.

Since its launch in 2009 Executives in Action has matched nearly one hundred and fifty executives with over seventy nonprofits.

Inside NorthPark Center the Dallas Cityscapes Exhibit is a place to beat the heat and checkout the kid-sized structures of the Dallas skyline.

“There’s the Reunion Tower and tons more,” said Dallas Cityscapes staff member Lindsey Weems.

It’s also for a good cause. All the proceeds benefit East Dallas Community Schools.

“We are so excited because this comes at a perfect time for us,” said Executive Director and Founder of East Dallas Community Schools Terry Ford.

East Dallas Community Schools has a 30 year track record of success in educating inner city kids.

“We have a ninety four percent graduation rate with eighty eight percent of those kids going on to college,” said Ford.

All exhibit proceeds will be put towards summer school, tutoring and funds to open a third school.

“It’s family based,” School Director of East Dallas Community Schools Maria Quiroga. “It’s community based. You have to make lengths with families. You have to educate the parents and they’re willing. They’re willing to work with us and we’re willing to work with them.”

Admission to the exhibit is five dollars for adults and three dollars for children give visitors access to all the sculptures and even a chance to build their own.

“There’s a kids construction zone as well and after you’ve looked around the exhibit everybody’s welcome to build whatever they want in the construction zone,” said Weems.

Each sculpture took Master Brick Builder Kurt Zimmerle about three months to build. Next year the exhibit is expected to be even bigger.

“They’re going to have a mobile creation moving around,” said Weems. “It’s just going to get better from here on out.”

This years exhibit ends August first.

“When most of us think about volunteering for a nonprofit what we think about is using our hands to clean up the place and wonderful work that’s really work from the heart,” said Executive Director of Executives in Action Jeremy Gregg. “What are executives are able to do is use their talents to improve a nonprofit. One of our proudest achievements has been our work with St. Vincent de Paul. We sent some executives over there with Dale Teeters and his team.”

“I was a corporate vice president for a major automotive electronics company and back in August a decision was made by someone three thousand miles away that the organization was going to be downsized,” said EIA Consultant Dale Teeters. “That was the first time in my career history that I was downsized from a company. It’s great to have your skills utilized to help a operation like St. Vincent de Paul that cannot afford the executive talent that we bring.”

“We were selling more merchandise then we were producing to the floor,” said General Manager of St. Vincent de Paul Dorothy Hoel. ” You can only do that for so long.”

“When we met Dorothy we were very impressed by her vision for the store and what she wanted to achieve,” said Gregg.

“Our first year of sales we delivered over seven hundred thousand,” said Hoel. “The second year was nine hundred thousand. Our goal this year is one point two million dollars.”

“She also had a very clear understanding of how Executives in Action could help her in a way that would make a huge impact for our executives but also really substantial impact on the nonprofit,” said Gregg. “Where this really was a win, win, win was Dorothy benefited tremendously. The store is a better store delivering more to the mission everyday because of our work. Our executives, Dale and his team also received a tremendous amount out of their work there at St. Vincent de Paul.”

Executives in Action Consultant Dale Teeters

“Overall with the project right now we saved about a hundred and thirty thousand dollars in annual savings,” said Teeters.

“This was a huge win for Executives in Action and for our donors,” said Gregg. “Our donors invested about thirteen thousand dollars in this project. The return on investment has already been at least ten times that.”

“I can’t be more pleased,” said Hoel. “I loved the relationship that we’ve developed with them. I think the individuals they bring in are top notch, high level executives. There’s no way as a small nonprofit especially as a start up that we could even afford to pay for anything like that so we’ve been extremely blessed.”

“Just to see the transformation in the organization and the things that people are thankful for has been amazing,” said Teeters. “It’s a great transformation. Everybody has embraced that.”

“We will know what success looks like five, ten or twenty years from now when the store still exists and its delivering tremendous amounts of resources back to the mission,” said Gregg. “They’ll be able to say that a lot of this got started in 2009 when Executives in Action first met with them. Also in 2010 when we first launched our project and carried it forward to drive more impact in the organization. The reason why this story is important is it’s a great example of what we can do for any charity out there. If a person watching this wanted to sponsor a similar project for their favorite nonprofit we would be honored to partner with them to do so.”

“The positive benefits of giving back and helping out the community is wonderful,” said Teeters. “It’s something I’ll continue to do through the rest of my life.”
