Instagram for photos. Twitter for random thoughts and Linkedin for professional networking. Now there’s something for dentists.

“We basically have put both dental offices and dentists and job seekers in the driver’s seat,” said Feridoon Amini, Founder of Dental Spots. “They can go to our site and tell us what days they’re available, how far from their home they want to work and how they want to be notified when a job becomes available.”

Amini says he came up with the idea for Dental Spots to save employers time and money while they search for potential employees.

“We are positioning Dental Spots to be a hub for dental professionals, whatever they do,” said Amini. “Whether they’re dental assistants, dental hygienests, dentists or even in sales. We are trying to be a comprehensive solution that provides dental and dental industry with solutions that impacts their bottom line.”

“When you can scan resumes online and not have to deal with the hassle of pen and paper or putting a listing in the newspaper it’s great,” said dentist Sarah Poteet. “This is the way of the feature for sure.”

And job seekers can post their resume on the site and they can receive notifications when a job becomes available in their area. The feature Amini raves about most is job seeker’s ability to post a video resume, something he said came from user comments.

“We don’t have a lot of time to spend finding temporary employment or new hires so this is an easy way, in our own time, on the computer to pre-screen candidates, especially with the video features they have,” said Poteet. “It’s a great way to get to know the potential candidate without wasting the time with bringing them in the office all the time.”

Amini says Dental Spots also launched mobile apps for the iPhone and Android that helps people find temporary employment or pick up extra shifts.

After a ribbon cutting Operation Kindness officially opened an expansion to its facility that will allow it to save more, large dogs.

“It’s amazing,” said Sherwin Daryani, Executive Director of Operation Kindness. “It’s something that I was hoping for a few years down the road and for Norma to come and make it happen so quickly for us was incredible.”

Norma is Norma Carney who wanted to do something to help Operation Kindness after she and her husband found Bear their dog.

“We took him home to take care of him until he could find a home and we fell in love with him,” said Carney. “We couldn’t give him up and he’s been the joy of our lives for eight and a half years.”

And in honor of her Great Pyrenees, Carney asked that the expansion be called Bear’s Den.

“He has meant so much to us,” said Carney. “I wanted to make it possible to save more, large dogs and Operation Kindness wanted to expand their dog area so it was meant to happen.”

Carney donated the two hundred and fifty thousand dollars needed for the expansion and Daryani was literally floored.

“Once I got up off the floor, I told her thank you so much and we’ll do it,” said Daryani.

Bear’s Den will double the shelter’s capacity for big dogs and increase small dog capacity by fifty percent. Daryani estimates that the increased space will allow Operation Kindness to save an additional eight hundred animals a year. The oldest and largest no kill shelter in North Texas hopes Carney’s donations will help it continue to do that for years to come.

Pamela Rudd calls herself a hard worker. She held a position as a trust officer at a bank for twenty five years. When the bank hit hard times, she was terminated from her position.

“I just had to suck it up, get over it, and land back on my feet because I am a survivor,” said Rudd.

Without any luck finding a new job, Rudd was referred to an organization called Dress for Success. It’s a program that aims to get disadvantaged women into more than just a business suit, but a career.

“I’ve worked since I was a teenager, so getting out into this job market now with the way the world is now, is very scary,” said Rudd.

“What they do for women here is just first rate,” said Alonzo Peterson, who is Executive Director of Dress for Success Dallas.

At their first visit, the clients are given a business suit and accessories. They are connected with the Professional Women’s Group, that offers women support and resources when getting back into the workforce, like interview training. Once they get a job, they are invited back to pick more pieces of professional wear.

“You can just see the whole light come into their face when they try something on,” said Peterson. “You know that’s the look and that’s the outfit for them.”

“Here, I just felt a whole new security,” said Rudd.

Rudd is currently working at a temp job, and credits Dress for Success, for the opportunity. She says she will never turn a job opportunity down, until she’s found the perfect career.

The Arlington Convention Center is the stage for the 2012 Greater Dallas Restaraunt Association Prostart Competition an event dedicated to finding the next generation of restaraunt entrepreneurs. Teams of students have spent months thinking of fancy dishes that they hope will dazzle judges.

“We’ve been practicing since like October for this so we’re very confident coming into this and we’re nervous but it’s a good nervous,” said Student Meagan Davis. “It’s not like we’re going to do bad nervous.”

These junior chefs know easy won’t win you first place. They’re going all out with five star meals like rack of lamb, or filet mignon. If done right, it could lead to a top finish, and future opportunities.

“Having this on your resume is incredible,” said Student Amber Kurkowski. “It definitely is one of those things that if a restaraunt owner see’s it on your resume they’re going to go oh wow you know what you’re doing. You’ve worked really hard and you know how this business runs.”

Besides the pressure of winning over the judges each team also has to beat the clock. They have sixty minutes to create a three course meal and if the clock hits zero before they’re done they’re penalized. The judges say it’s all part of learning to be a professional chef.

“We want these kids to really be successful,” said Roger Kaplan who is a member of the Greater Dallas Restaurant Assocation. “We’re all rooting for them. This is a chance to get a feel for what our business is like, meet with our business leaders in the industry, and we want to be the ones to set them on the right paths.”

Finally after a long day each meal is ready and the judges have sampled each one. The winners are announced. For these students it was an emotional victory.

“I feel like we finally made our name!” said Student Macey Golden. “We’re out in the boonies at Royse City High School and we finally showed them that we can actually do this.”

Today’s win is just the beginning. Their next stop will be in Austin to compete with other high schools from all over Texas in the state finals.

After Will Rosellini left the world of professional sports, he dedicated himself to science, a passion developed while watching some of the world’s best pitchers.

“I was curious how they could throw with the accuracy of a quarter of an inch, but I could only throw with the accuracy of three to four inches,” said Rosellini, CEO of MicroTransponder.

The former professional baseball player realized this tiny difference related to the nervous system. That discovery led him to start MicroTransponder, a company developing solutions to treat neurological disorders.

“What we’ve found in clinical studies is that by applying electricity to the vagus nerve we can open up a window in the brain with neurotransmitters that allow us to drive the brain to pay attention and learn faster,” said Rosellini.

MicroTransponder and research partner UT Dallas have quickly discovered their findings could potentially help people with a particular disorder.

“The place where that’s been immediately successful and applicable would be in the treatment of Tinnitus,” said Rosellini.

Tinnitus is not an ordinary ringing of the ears. It’s constant and can reach unbearable decibels, affecting the way of life for people like Phillip Lofton who suffers from Tinnitus.

“Because you suffer alone and nobody else can hear it, it’s hard for my family members and friends to understand it never, ever goes away,” said Lofton.

For twenty years Lofton has battled Tinnitus. The noise he hears has been measured at decibels equaling a jet engine. To Rosellini, that sound is a reminder of why he’s working so hard.

“For nearly two million people the tinnitus is so bad it affects them at work and for 15% of people of Tinnitus sufferers they’re emotionally disturbed by the suffering,” said Rosellini.

MicroTransponder has seen successful results on human patients in Belgium, and they are currently raising funds to be approved in the United States.

“For smaller companies that are doing medical products, we need to raise on the order of ten to twelve million dollars to get our product approved by the FDA,” said Rosellini.

Although MicroTransponder is in the early stages of fundraising and treatment, the company has big plans.

“We intend to restore or enhance the nervous system of one million patients worldwide,” said Rosellini.

And as long as he still suffers, Lofton says he wants to help find a solution.
