Worldwide most people are familiar with Susan G. Komen for the Cure and the pink breast cancer ribbon. In Dallas at Borders people got a much closer look at what inspired this global, multi-million dollar cause and it all started with two sisters.

“A few weeks before she died she asked me if I would help her end breast cancer and I promised her I would if it took me the rest of my life,” said Founder of Susan G. Komen for the Cure Nancy Brinker.

Nancy Brinker’s older sister by 3 years, Susan, was also her best friend but Susan died of breast cancer at the age of thirty six.

“She had a very quiet, lovely way of communicating and she loved people,” said Brinker.

In Brinker’s new book Promise Me she shares her memories of her sister including Susan’s diagnosis of breast cancer in 1977 when there was still a dark stigma around it. Brinker promised Susan that she would one day find the cure for breast cancer and Susan G. Komen for the Cure was born.

“It was really her wish and it just set me on a path,” said Brinker. “The more I got on it the more I realized how important it really was to do.”

“As I look at all the women here today in pink it’s overwhelming to think that a disease can so devastate an entire world,” said breast cancer survivor Jan Marshall.

In 1984 Brinker herself was diagnosed with breast cancer but unlike her sister she survived it.

“I developed breast cancer a few years later,” said Brinker. “I’ve never really spent a lot of time talking about mine because it’s never been about me. Its always been about actualizing this promise.”

In the time since that promise was made five year breast cancer survivor rates have risen to ninety eight percent. Now a breast cancer diagnosis is no longer a death sentence.

“It’s been an amazing journey and we’ve gotten a lot done,” said Brinker.

“I have a seventeen year old daughter and I would love for it to be gone before she gets her first mammogram,” said support Cindy Waldrop.

“It is possible to do something to fix something that’s wrong in the world,” said Brinker.

“I’m hoping that I can inspire other women with what I’ve learned so they don’t have to go through the same type of hardships that I have,” said author Jenny McCarthy.

When you think of Jenny McCarthy you might think, blonde bomb shell or even Playmate of the Year. But how about New York Times best selling author? Well, she is.

“Actually it’s depressing after you finish each of her books because then it was over,” said Shawna Wright. “For me that was depressing but she always writes another one, so this will be a different twist.”

Just like her other six books, this one is already on the New York Times best seller list. In this new book she’s opening up about contemporary relationships using humor, facts, fantasy and inspirational messages, as she looks back on the experiences from her first love to her last.

“When someone fails miserably in certain areas of their life or have a health crisis, and I happen to have gone through both with my lovers and a health crisis with my son then I think that when you go through those types of experiences, you learn a lot of lessons,” said McCarthy.

Changing pace from her last book on autism now to Love, Lust and Faking It, Jenny McCarthy arrived at the Barnes & Noble in Dallas, with hundreds of fans waiting to meet her.

“I would have gotten here at two in the morning if I had to,” said Wright.

Don’t let the title of the book fool you. McCarthy says there’s deeper meaning behind all the fluff.

“The faking it part of the book, people I’m think I’m talking about the obvious, when really I’m not,” said McCarthy. “I’m talking about how to become your authentic self and how not to fake it.”

McCarthy did some research before writing this book.

“I slept with a lot of men,” said McCarthy. “That was my research.”

“To have someone of her caliber to be so vulnerable and to expose everything that she’s been through that’s huge to be that vulnerable,” said Wright.

“You don’t need a lover in your life to have love in your life,” said McCarthy.

16 year old Brena Gillaspie of Clifton, Texas has been dancing since the age of 4.

“My goals are to be on tour with any singers,” said Brena Gillaspie. “I like Beyonce, Janet Jackson, Michael, Lady Gaga and Justin Beber.”

So Gillaspie traveled two hours to the Power House of Dance in Frisco to learn from nationally acclaimed instructors who have choreographed for artists such as Justin Timberlake and Janet Jackson. The instructors ranged from Lil’ C to Dallas Marericks Dancers Director Mallory Mills.

“I have a very strong energy for dancing,” said Mallory Mills. “It’s my passion and every time I am in front of anybody teaching anybody it’s almost like I want them to be the best they can be because I know I had those tools growing up.”

Tools that Mills hopes that 9 year old Abby Koczo will have too.

“Dancing is kind of like me doing what I want to, when I want to, what I want to do and why I want to do it,” said 4th grader Abby Koczo from Fisher Elementary. “It makes me feel like queen.”

Making her students feel like queen is something that choreographer Kim Mcswain firmly believes in.

“That’s what I do, and that’s why I’m kind over the top and in their face,” said Kim Mcswain. “It’s not so much of my choreographer or my talent or my credits. That has nothing to do with it. Every kid when they leave my class feels special and amazing.”

“I have mirrors in my room, and I’ll be dancing for hours but it’s never good enough,” said Gillaspie. “I guess that’s good being a perfectionist, but my mom’s like you need to chill because you’re good.”

Parents, professional choreographers and fans across the world encourage aspiring dancers like Gillaspie to believe in themselves and get out there and dance.

The historic north Texas square has a new sheriff in town. City Councilman, Don Day, purchased his first building in the downtown McKinney Square in the mid-1990s. Since then, he’s bought and renovated over 20 buildings and now owns about 9 businesses with his wife Linda, sparking a downtown revival.

“When I came down here there were a lot of boarded up buildings of course and I just felt like it would develop into something good,” said McKinney resident Linda Day.

“You could shoot a canon down Louisiana Street and not worry about hitting anybody,” said McKinney resident Don Day. “There were very few people down here.”

Don didn’t let that interfere with his vision, especially since finances weren’t a big concern.

“I bought the building right next door for right dollars per square foot,” said Don Day. “Now it’s worth about one hundred and eight dollars.”

A charming fact about downtown McKinney is most of the renovated buildings have been around since the 1800’s when people like Jesse James & Doc Holiday roamed these streets.

“So there was a lot of history that went on here,” said Don Day. “Its more than most people realize. We have done what we thought we could do to bring this very charming, beautiful place back to life.”

Don says there’s a big demand for more of this type of downtown living.

“We have a demand now for residential loft apartments around downtown,” said Don Day. “Those will be coming in the next couple of years.”

“I feel invigorated by being an entrepreneur,” said author Kristine Kahanek. ” I love being my own boss. I love the freedom it gives me to be with my kids when I want to be with my kids and then focus on the business when I need to focus on the business.”

Kristine Kahanek spent 20 years between Austin and Dallas as a television meteorologist until her heart told her it was time to tune into something new.

“There was something inside me saying you need to find another path that will fulfill you because that one had stopped fulfilling me,” said Kahanek. “It was just becoming too much and did not really work with my life like I wanted it to.”

Visiting schools as a guest speaker, having two adolescent children of her own and still mourning the loss of her daughter Katherine made becoming a children’s author and building the main character around her own family’s guardian angel a very appropriate and meaningful transition.

“Sometimes when I’m out walking or out and have some alone time I think about Katherine. I say this is for you” said Kahanek.

Her book, Katie and the Magic Umbrella, teaches children about the weather.

“There are so many kids that don’t understand that thunderstorms are a part of nature and they’re always going to happen,” said Kahanek. “I think when children understand the weather better they’re not so afraid of it. If we didn’t have storms we wouldn’t have green yards, flowers and trees. We need those storms. They have a purpose.”

And just like how storms have a purpose Kahanek says she is seeing how her books do too.

“The parents are e-mailing me saying thank you so much for writing this book,” said Kahanek. “That’s exactly why I wrote the books. It’s been incredible and very satisfying because I feel like the books are serving their purpose.”

Kahanek’s first book has sold about ten thousand copies and has also given her a tangible way to honor the daughter she lost.
