The Marquardt’s have the power couple role down. David owns his own cleaning business and his wife Shelby is an anesthesiologist but they haven’t stopped there. Now they’re balancing a booming business bringing fashion into hospitals around the nation. Their designer scrubs have been featured on hit medical shows like Grey’s Anatomy. David says the couple stumbled upon the business idea when Shelby was in medical school.

“When Shelby finally was working in the hospital she couldn’t handle wearing the old, ugly scrub stuff,” said David Marquardt.

“I thought there’s no way I’m going to wear a uniform like this for the rest of my life,” said Shelby Marquardt. “I knew I was going to be a doctor from a young age. That was my goal from the beginning so I thought I’m going to wear this everyday so I’m going to create something that I like.”

Tired of squeezing her long hair into the traditional scrub hat Shelby decided to take designing into her own hands. Already knowing how to sew she started making her own hats. It wasn’t long before Shelby’s co-workers and friends wanted hats like hers to and then blue sky scrubs was born.

“People were asking her where did she get it or can I get one,” said David Marquardt. “She was selling them out of a brown, paper bag to her friends at the hospital and I started building the website. We worked on getting a manufacturer and from there it just propelled.”

blue sky scrubs are made in Dallas. They are getting orders from around the country with publications from the New York Times and O Magazine singing the praises of their scrubs designs. After the launch of the company in 2005 they added tops and bottoms to their line of scrubs. The couple says they’ve seen the number for blue sky scrubs double and even triple over the years.

“It’s overwhelming,” said Shelby Marquardt. “I see people everyday at work wearing the products and I’m stunned.”

Comedian and nationally syndicated radio host Steve Harvey has a New York Times best selling book spilling secrets to women on how to think like a man. Now Harvey is opening up his ranch outside of Dallas giving lessons to boys on how to act like a man. There were 50 young men and 50 flown in from across the country all in Little Elm, Texas to participate in Steve Harvey’s Mentoring Weekend. This is the second year that Harvey has opened his ranch stretching over 200 acres to teenage boys in need of positive, male role models.

“Boys get their imagery from a man of some kind and if you don’t put the right imagery in front of him he’s going to attach himself to some imagery of a man,” said mentor Steve Harvey.

The young men are invited to Harvey’s ranch for four days. All of the boys are living in single parent homes without their fathers.

“It’s a virtual impossibility for a woman to turn a boy into a man,” said Harvey. “You are teaching what principles to him? You can’t know them. They have to be lived.”

So Harvey recruited heavyweights like education activist and CNN Education Contributor Doctor Steve Perry to lead workshops to make sure each young man here is prepared for manhood.

“There’s so many people that talk about doing something and Steve Harvey is actually doing something,” said Doctor Steve Perry. “For me to come down here and bring my family down here I do it because he’s doing something meaningful and we want to make sure we do all we can to support him.”

And local mentors like Dallas Police Officer Leroy Quigg came out too.

“I’m in the gang unit and I see a lot of kids throw their lives away,” said Dallas police officer Leroy Quigg. “This is real meaningful to me to try to put the kids on the right path so they grow up to be productive citizens.”

Over the weekend Quigg worked closely with mentee Brandon Berry. He’s noticed a big change in Berry in just a few days.

“He came here really shy but now he’s more extroverted and talking to people,” said Quigg.

“It’s all about manhood,” said student Brandon Berry. “How to stand strong and stand for what you believe in. If you need some money don’t take the easy way out just stick through it. Put God first and hopefully you’ll come out the bigger man in the end.”

“Real me go to church,” said Harvey. “Real men have jobs. Real men work everyday. Real men honor women. Real men take care of their children. Real men that become fathers perform as fathers. Real men respect the law. Real men are disciplined. Real men do what they say their going to do. If you make better boys better boys make better men and then women have better selection. We have to change the core of the family base otherwise we’re going to mess this thing up for good.”

With more help Harvey is planning to take his mentoring weekend to 10 more cities around the nation.

Pat and Emmitt Smith Charities invited a long list of celebrity friends for a weekend of fun while making dreams come true for underprivileged kids.

“Instead of taking all the attention on himself I love the fact that he’s allowing the Hall of Fame year to be a platform to bring attention to the charity,” said Charity President Pat Smith.

“Emmitt and Pat do these in a classy way,” said basketball Hall of Famer Nancy Leiberman.

“Everybody’s going to show up for Emmitt,” said 2007 NFL Hall of Famer Michael Irvin.

“I know that their heart and their minds are committed to helping the under served children of this community,” said former Dallas Stars Goalie Marty Turco.

Emmitt Smith Hall of Fame Trip of a Lifetime is a contest Pat and Emmitt decided to open up to kids living in the Dallas metroplex. The winner will travel with the Smith family on August 7th to Canton, Ohio for Emmitt’s induction into the NFL Hall of Fame.

“He does a lot of things that people don’t know about,” said former Dallas Cowboys fullback Daryl Johnston. “When we went to the launch of the foundation even I learned some things that Emmitt and Pat have been doing for years.”

Former teammate Michael Irvin says he appreciates and understands what Smith is doing.

“Unless you show them and put them in a place where they’re exposed to different things they’ll never reach greater things,” said Irvin.

Emmitt Smith took to the green for a golf tournament and then all team contest finalists came out waiting with anticipation to hear who would be the winner. That person is Prentice Richmond.

“My thought is did I win or is it a dream,” said contest winner Prentice Richmond.

“To live on his own and to have the attitude and the spirit that Prentice has that speak volumes,” said NFL Hall of Fame inductee Emmitt Smith.

Smith is hoping exposure will help give Richmond the hope to achieve even more then what he’s already doing.

“He could do anything that’s negative but he chose a different path,” said Emmitt Smith. “That to me is what this is all about.”

The cowboys were out at Lonestar Park racing against the odds.

“The more I bet the more I lose,” said former Dallas Cowboys safety Cliff Harris. “It’s fun though. Everybody that comes out has a great time.”

Veteran Dallas Cowboys, current players and lots of sports heavy weights came together to place their bets against the threat of diabetes.

“I’ve had people in my family suffer from diabetes so I definitely support the cause,” said Dallas Cowboys safety Terence Newman.

This event raised money for the American Diabetes Association.

“We’ve seen immense growth in this event,” said sports columnist and ESPN radio host Randy Galloway.

Growth that has taken it to be the largest fund raising event for the ADA in six states and one of the top five in the country. Sports columnist Randy Galloway is an honorary chairman.

“We’re very proud of that,” said Galloway. “It’s because of my wife and a lot of my friends.”

Friends like Dallas Cowboys owner, president and general manager Jerry Jones.

“Success means helping a lot of people,” said Dallas Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones. “My father’s families has diabetes so I do know first hand how dehabilitating it can be and how compromising it can be.”

Almost all supporters who came to the event had some kind of connection to diabetes.

“My dad was actually diagnosed with diabetes,” said former Dallas Cowboys defensive lineman Tony Casillas. “He suffered some amputation.”

Melissa Caraway works for the ADA and says life with diabetes is an adjustment but education about the disease is key to a normal life.

“It’s not a death sentence,” said Melissa Caraway. “It’s not going to kill you as long as you manage it. Take the time to listen to what your doctor says.”
