“It would have given us a little more hope s that we don’t have to constantly find ourselves on the street corner with a rainbow flag yelling in a vacuum,” said activist CD Kirven.
Equality March Texas and the Lesbian Gay Bi-Sexual Transgender (LGBT) community of North Texas came together for a Marriage Equality Rally.
“Honestly I think most of us wanted to come here and celebrate a victory in Maine tonight,” said Co-founder of Equality March Texas Daniel Cates.
The victory this community hoped for would have allowed same sex couples to marry in Maine, but voters rejected the state law.
“Basically Maine shot us down, but we’re not gonna give up,” said supporter John Frazier. “We’re gonna keep rioting for rights.”

They say they’re also here to express continued outrage a year after Proposition 8. According to the measure, only a marriage between a man and woman is valid or recognized in California.
“This actually started over a year ago with the passing of Prop 8 in California,” said Cates. “For many years I’ve been one of those people that watched the television getting angry and screaming at the television saying someone’s got to do something. It really took me realizing I’m somebody and all of us are somebody.”
In the five states performing gay marriage – Iowa, Connecticut, Vermont, New Hampshire and Massachusetts – the law took effect after legislation or court order.
“It would have been the first time that a state has come to vote on gay marriage and actually won,” said Co-founder of Equality March Texas Tisha McDaniel. “It would have actually just been hope for the LGBT community and activists here in Texas that it is possible for the people to vote and to vote in our favor.”

States which recognize same-sex marriages but do not grant same-sex marriage certificates include New York, Washington D.C. and Rhode Island.
“I would think that Dallas has one of the more organized communities in comparison to even Austin or Houston but we’ve been getting a lot of support from people in other parts of the state,” said McDaniel. “They look to Dallas.”
“Dallas is actually more accepting than most cities,” said Frazier.
