The Stroll for Epilepsy is a fundraiser that raises awareness and funds for those who are affected by epilepsy. Successful business owner David Holley is an epileptic.
“I’m very fortunate,” said Holley. “I’ve really only had 3 seizures in my life.”
That’s why fundraisers for the Stroll for Epilepsy are so important to Holley. This year he and his squad of gymnasts raised fifty thousand dollars for the cause.
“The simple way to explain epilepsy is you have a seizure that occurs in your brain,” said Holley. “It’s kind of like an electrical event that goes off in your brain and you could space out for a few seconds. Sometimes it’s a major seizure that can cause you to pass out for 30 seconds to several minutes and it could be even fatal.”
During the stroll epileptics like Thomas Gates wore purple shirts to distinguish themselves from their supporters. Gates was diagnosed at 2 and since has dealt with blackouts, seizures and near death experiences. He says he doesn’t let the bad stuff get to him.
“It’s been an ongoing process to adapt but I’ve gotten to the point where each individual thing all I can do is just laugh about it,” said Gates. “I love the fact that it’s more just part of my life as long as I am fully medicated I don’t have to worry about it.”
The Stroll for Epilepsy isn’t your typical stroll at the Dallas Zoo. People showed up for a much more important reason to help friends and family who have epilepsy with mounting medical bills. The Stroll for Epilepsy Foundation is here to help with medical bills.
“We have medical clinics for the uninsured,” said director of the Stroll for Epilepsy Donna Stahlhut. “They can come into our clinics and get their medical care through our specialists at no cost.”
The stroll is held at the Dallas Zoo every year
